About a year ago, I wrote a little piece on our *Cowboy Me! blog, about my dad. It was the anniversary of his living, so I chatted about the real heroes, and true cowboys of our time. Since then, we have cleaned our boards, on each of the blogs, but I have had quite a few emails requesting that I re run this piece. For the memory of my dad, and all of the great dads out there .....enjoy.
~I have met and known a lot of cowboys in my life. I have been lucky enough to meet a few of those "movie makin' " cowboys, and a couple of those sports type cowboys, too. I have even had access to a few of those "famous" cowboy types, and all too many of those cowboy wannabes. Yet, the coolest cowboy I have ever known did not wear a stetson or hop on a palomino. The coolest cowboy I have ever known, was my dad.
He didn't rope or ride. He never rode the range, but my dad held the cowboy spirit that made this country great. Like most men and woman of his era, my dad did not waste time. Never one to over think or whine, he simply jumped in, and got the job done. Whether challenge or opportunity, he saw it thorough. Many men and women of the past generations did the same, they knew no other way. True spirit. American spirit. Entrepreneurs and Cowboys, each one.
My dad left this earth a few years ago, yet not a day goes by that I don't miss him. I can easily recall his huge smile, brightened by his many words of encouragement. I could share story after story of how my dad put his own dreams on hold to further mine. He taught me how to dream, and showed me how to make the dreams become reality. He also gifted me the courage to see dreams come true. Good or bad. Dream them, follow them, and learn from them ...Despite the outcome, always enjoy the journey.
So today, as I remember my dad, recalling his big smile, I think about getting things done. I dream about setting new goals and making them reality. I embrace the journey, rather than the outcome.
Thinkin' about you dad. Rememberin' you real hard, missin' you real bad, and lovin' you always~
*visit Cowboy Me once in a while for chats about all things cowboy and the people we meet.
