Have you joined in the celebration of Paddington Bear? Yes, sweet little Paddington Bear celebrates is fiftieth birthday this week and we are all invited.
If you use Google as your search engine, then yesterday, October 13th you may have noticed that Google paid homage to the lost little bear with his own page ...He certainly has come a long way, hasn't he? From the railways of Britain to the world wide web. Congratz! to Paddington.
"The first Paddington story, entitled A Bear Called Paddington was released on 13 October 1958. The book described the Bear's first year in Britain, from his discovery at Paddington station by his owners Mr and Mrs Brown, through the trauma of his first experience of bathing, and concluded with the anniversary of his fortuitous discovery.
Mr Bond describes how a pang of sympathy for a neglected toy bear in a London shop inspired him to write the children's stories which have since been translated into 30 languages, and sold more than 30 million copies around the world: "I bought a small toy bear on Christmas Eve 1956. I saw it left on a shelf in a London store and felt sorry for it. I took it home as a present for my wife Brenda and named it Paddington as we were living near Paddington Station at the time. I wrote some stories about the bear, more for fun than with the idea of having them published. After ten days I found that I had a book on my hands. It wasn’t written specifically for children, but I think I put into it the kind things I liked reading about when I was young." "
It is a lovely story ...
I too, had a Paddington Bear when I was growing up. I bought into the story, the bear, the whole bit. Although he was a bit too big to take into bed, he was there each night and again each morning as I woke. Dressed in his slicker and boots, and that silly little hat, Paddington Bear was a nice memory from my childhood. Years later, as an adult, "Santa" gifted me with a Santa Paddington ......Whimsy at it's best.
If you recall memories of Paddington, now may be a nice time to introduce your children or the children in your life to the travels of this furry wonder. Consider a visit to ebay for a list of books and toys. ( I searched several book stores and found nothing, so I am thinking beyond the regular retail box here.) A search at Amazon, found several good choices at great prices and you could pop into the local library to see their selection too.
Life needs a bit of cheering, grab a book and recall the best of your childhood. ...enjoy!
