Chatting with a friend the other day about the usual ....Environment, politics, family and power. Power? Yes, power. No, not the stuff that runs your computers and tvs, the kind that runs the world. The power that runs your life. Personal power.
I have no personal power! Do you? Maybe it is just that I, like most women feel as if I have no power. My friend stopped me dead in my tracks. He quickly informed me that since I sit near a computer for a great deal of my life, I have a huge amount of power. I have consumer power.
I have the power that translates into dollars and cents. With each email I send, telling a company why I am not loving their products, or why I am not like their latest advertising campaign I am using my power. When enough of us send an email someone will listen.
You know, I think my friend was right. I often have used my buying power as a way to send a silent message to a company. I have stopped purchasing a product that sends all of it's business off shore. I also have stood behind companies that stay and work to make the lives' of their employees better. I have used my small purchases as my voice.
As I move forward in my days, I will not stay silent any longer. I will continue to purchase from companies that I applaud, and walk from those I do not. I also will send an email or two to explain my change in purchasing and voice my concerns. If enough of us send a quick email, maybe someone will listen.
If you find service lacking, tell someone. If you find a product's change inadequate, tell someone. On the flip side, if you notice a great wait person at your favorite restaurant, tell the manager. If your favorite brand of something is better than ever, tell someone.
One last word ....As someone famous once said, "Use your power wisely", ...enjoy!
